Crullers

This recipe was found in the 1929 Modern Priscilla Cookbook. When I didn’t accidentally cook them too long, they were quite tasty and my boys loved them. They are quite a bit like doughnuts.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup Splenda sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • About 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Preparation:

  1. Cream shortening and add sugar gradually
  2. Add well beaten eggs and the milk
  3. With three cups of the flour mix baking powder, salt and spices, and add to first mixture
  4. Add vanilla and enough more flour to make a dough that can be handled
  5. Roll to about a quarter of an inch in thickness, cut in half-inch strips and twist to form figure eights, or cut with an ordinary doughnut cutter
  6. Fry in deep fat about 3 minutes at 370 degrees
  7. Roll in granulated sugar

This recipe makes quite a few crullers, so make sure you and your family are hungry. I ended up sharing mine, sending them to other houses.

  1. These sound awesome!

    • They were delicious, even if the recipe made well over what we could eat. I sent the rest to a friends’ house.

      Thank you for stopping by!

      Naia.
