White Bread

A typical white bread made with yeast. Mind the recipe where it says to cook for 15 minutes at 450 degrees and then down to 350 degrees for 35 minutes. If you don’t, it comes out looking extremely sickly.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups milk or water
  • 1 yeast cake or 1 yeast packet
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp shortening
  • up to 7 cups flour – I’ve only ever used 5

Preparation:

  1. Scald the milk, remove 1/4 cup
  2. Let 1/4 cup cool to lukewarm then mix in yeast
  3. Add sugar, salt, and shortening to the rest
  4. Let cool to lukewarm then add yeast mix
  5. Add only enough flour until dough can be handled
  6. Mix and knead until easily handled
  7. Let rise in a warm place until 2-3 times original size
  8. Knead down, shape into loaves and place in prepared loaf pans
  9. Let rise again until doubled
  10. Bake at 400 degree Fahrenheit for 15 minutes, then at 350 degree Fahrenheit for 35 minutes
  11. Let cool and serve
