A Fun February Block

I am leader of a group of ladies who attempt to swap a block a month. We’ve been doing it for nearly a year and, while quite a few aren’t doing it anymore, we are still trying. To that end, I came up with a block for February. I am quite sure that there are many types and styles of this block but this is the one that I wrote up on my graph paper. I did not copy it from anywhere, so if it looks like yours, I apologize. 🙂

You can use scraps to create this. You can even get creative with the heart itself, mixing scraps of various heart/Valentine colors. Have fun!

Materials (For the one I created)

  • Pink/Red (Heart Color): (1) 12 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and (2) 6 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
  • White (Background Color): (1) 12 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ and (4) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ and (2) 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″

That’s it! If you want to get creative, go ahead and do so.

First step is to set up your pieces. From here, you’ll attach the white and create the heart.

To start, create the bottom of the heart. Use the red 12 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ with two of the white 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″. You’ll attach them like the Flying Geese we’ve done before.

Attach the second piece directly across from the first.

Go ahead and put those back up on the board. I created two hearts at the same time. You can make as many as you wish.

Next, you’ll take one red 6 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ and two white 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″. You’ll attach to opposite corners as shown above.

There ya go! Quick and easy. Now, attach the two red peaks together and then assemble the three rows to create the heart.

Done! A 12 1/2″ heart for exchange or to create something from. I’ll tell ya that I have an idea to make another table runner from these hearts. If I finish it before tomorrow, I’ll add it to my WIP Wednesday.

If you do not want the white strip at the top of the heart, the assembly is the same but the cutting instructions are as follows:

  • Pink/Red (Heart Color): (1) 12 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ (replace the 12 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ from above with this piece) and (2) 6 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
  • White (Background Color): (2) 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ and (4) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″

Assembly is exactly the same but the white stripe will not be at the top. I haven’t created one so you’ll have to do with my graph drawing as a picture. If you have any questions, please ask!
