But, it’s broke. I can’t!

My sewing machine has been broken for several months. I’ve been distraught over it being broken and have refused to even consider sewing.

Yesterday, I got a phone call. It was a lady from the local quilt guild reminding me that I had 12 applique red/white flower 6″ blocks due tonight – Thursday. It was a challenge I entered into back in …. February? March?

But, it’s broke! I can’t do it!

Or, so I thought.

I took my machine to Brady’s awhile back. They had it a couple weeks, said they could fix it. It would cost $250 to replace the motherboard and the foot pedal. I finally went and picked it up – I can’t afford to fix it. It has sat in my basement since then and I haven’t touched it. I thought it was still broke.

This morning, I went downstairs to try and complete the challenge I signed up for before 6 p.m. tonight. I didn’t know what to do. I tried drawing a flower and cutting it out so I could “reverse applique” the red and white together with the flower pattern.

I was going to cut out the flower and put red behind the white – sewing them together around the edges of the flower. No dice. My very old Brother machine was acting up and throwing fits. Now, both of my machines were broken. What to do?!

I pulled out my machine – the one that they said was still broken – with a prayer on my lips. Amazingly, it worked, without a hitch. So, I got a bright idea. I hooked up the embroidery part of the machine and loaded it up. Did it have a flower that I could use? An outline that I could embroider and then cut around so it looks like an applique?

The rules did not say it had to be done a certain way. It just had to be an applique flower using the colors red and white. So, I embroidered a flower with my pretty Singer Futura and then cut the extra red off the material.

I now have 12 little 6″ blocks of white with a red tulip applique. Sometimes, it feels like I do my best work and get the best ideas when I am under a time constraint. It is due at 6 p.m., I started at 11 a.m. and finished by 1 p.m.

Now, I know, I should have started this a long time ago. I think I get a free pass because of the upheaval of my life since early April. I did get it done, though! And, it looks great.

Thank you for listening,

Naia.
